The Magazine Antiques - March/April 2011

Antiques Magazine was started in 1922. The magazine was completely redesigned in 2009. The head-of-title note "The Magazine" first appeared in January 1928, but from August 1952 to February 1971, it was not used. The magazine has a readership of 150,000 and is published by Brant Publications, a firm founded in 1984 by Peter M. Brant, a newsprint tycoon and art collector. Influential as it is, it's entirely clear how this journal has stayed one of the most successful antiques-specialist titles in the world. With a remarkable circulation in its home territory of the USA, although the content remains mainly focused on the American antiques scene - the original reason for its presence all those decades ago- its outlook is international, as suits any title dedicated to the field.

American antique collectors, so the media clichés tell us, are very affectionate of the cultural output of much older art and design cultures in addition to domestic traditions. Furthermore, as a forward-looking title that understands the shifts in trends and collection markets, Antiques is one of the few titles that has devoted editorial to new emerging markets and trends in addition to the more traditional Eurocentric circuits and their established tendencies towards Orientalism. Picking up on trends -such as a fresh appetite for African antiques in a new multicultural generation or emerging East-to-East markets- Antiques remains an informative and accessible resource for a diverse readership; for love or money.

James Gardner's article, "The Anxiety of Modernism" is a strong reason to buy the spring issue of Antiques. Spring issue is available Other Edition as a digital magazine. The magazine, Taking its cue from the major new exhibition 'Vienna 1900: Style and Identity' that recently opened at the Neue Galerie in New York, it firstly traces the difference between the Viennese movement and the contemporary developments in Paris. If the stylistic differences are more familiar territory, then what makes Gardner's piece so inspirational is that, rather than explain Klimt and his contemporaries in purely appealing terms, his is a discussion that locates the Viennese movement within the context of Europe's oldest, most ossified and most controlling imperial culture. James Gardner's article is hardly the sole reason to buy this issue. Amongst all the usual learned and informative regular features on the best of the international antique scene, there are numerous other fascinating feature articles. A good example is John Stuart Gordon's article on Lurelle Guild, the great American product designer whose highly desirable modern designs of the 1930's frequently pay homage to much older design movements. And, for those who believe that dynamite comes in small packages, Danielle O. Kisluk-Grosheide's article lifts the cover on the secret lives of cabinets, cases and boxes that were an essential of the European well-appointed household from the Middle Ages to the early twentieth century. Her article contains as many concealed gems as its subject.

How A Home Inspection Can Help You Get A Great Home Deal

If you have found your dream home, you may be looking to the home inspection with both excitement and dread. If your inspector finds a problem during the inspection, you can use the findings to negotiate a better deal. Expense reduction and contract negotiation is common when making a home purchase. Before moving forward after your inspection, be sure you understand your options.

When a problem is found, you can ask that the price of the home be reduced. Consider that the home is worth less because it is not in ideal condition. You may have to fix the problem immediately, but some problems are not safety issues. If your inspector finds there are parts of the carpet that are worn away, you can ask the homeowner to consider a lower price because you will eventually need to replace the carpet. You can ask for the money to fix the problem. If you want to get the deal done as quickly as possible and the home can be occupied with the existing problem, just ask that cash to fix the problem be part of your deal. You will walk away from the settlement with the funds to make the improvement. Cash can be especially helpful shortly after buying a home.

Finally, remember you can always walk away from the deal. The home seller will be more concerned they will lose their sale based on the findings of an inspector. Use anything the inspector finds a leverage to get the best deal you possibly can.

Choosing ADA Compliant Commercial Door Hardware

Commercial property and business owners have a lot to consider when it comes to setting up a store. Planning a building, office, store or warehouse design is typically left up to contractors while the owner concentrates on pressing matters like inventory, etc.

However, neglecting to get involved in the design process may inadvertently lead to excluding patrons with disabilities. It may even result in a lawsuit. Choosing ADA compliant commercial door hardware should be the responsibility of both the contractor and the business or property owner. The United States Department of Justice administrates the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA.) The Act became law in 1990, and its aim is to protect Americans with disabilities from discrimination, and to provide them with equal opportunity to jobs, shopping and every thing else pertaining to daily living.

The ADA has gone through a number of updates and amendments as times have changed and technology has progressed. The most recent amendments to the ADA were signed into law by former President George Bush in September of 2008.

The ADA, in part, requires commercial property owners to design their buildings, offices, store space, etc. in a manner that makes them fully accessible to people with disabilities. While the word "disabilities" has a broad definition, it speaks in particular of Americans with limited mobility (i.e. wheelchair bound or crippled) when applied to commercial building design.

The parameters for commercial building design for Americans with disabilities are set out in the ADA Standards for Accessible Design. Section 4.13 applies specifically to commercial door hardware. This government publication is available for free to interested citizens, advocacy groups, contractors and business owners/managers.

Doorway egress and ease of opening are of particular importance when addressing issues of access to commercial buildings/businesses for people with disabilities. The current ADA sets particular standards for door egress, for example, to ensure that those in wheelchairs can enter and exit a public building without undue difficulty.

When it comes to commercial door hardware, the ADA states in Section 4.13.9 that: "Handles, pulls, latches, locks, and other operating devices on accessible doors shall have a shape that is easy to grasp with one hand and does not require tight grasping, tight pinching, or twisting of the wrist to operate." This means that doors on public buildings must be outfitted with ADA compliant commercial door hardware. Lever-style door handles are one example of ADA-compliant door entry hardware.

Other commercial door hardware components, such as door closers, must also be in compliance with ADA regulations. Door closers shut doors automatically after they have been opened. Door closers must be set in such a manner that allows ample time and egress for a person with disabilities to fully enter the doorway before the door swings shut again.

Other commercial door hardware components that must be taken into consideration when outfitting public buildings include crash bars/panic bars, automatic/power door openers, locks and thresholds. Every business/commercial property owner and contractor should become familiar with the Americans with Disabilities Act, particularly the "Standards for Accessible Design" section.

No-Fault Divorce States

Every jurisdiction in the United States has different standards and reasons that a party may file for dissolution of marriage. No-fault divorce describes any divorce where the spouse suing for divorce does not have to prove that the other spouse did something wrong. All states allow divorces regardless of who is at fault.

What are the pros of living in a no-fault state?  One of the main attractions of this is your ability to file for a divorce at any time (as long as you meet the residency requirement). You do not have to wait for a certain amount of time, or state a specific reason, such as adultery, for said divorce.  The court cannot take these into account in a no-fault divorce state, as all property is divided into equal proportions.  However, the Judge may slant the property settlement 60/40 to the party who has been harmed, but this is only in specific cases. 

Your divorce can be finalized once at least 30 days have elapsed since filing the petition, at least in Missouri. Your divorce is finalized during a brief uncontested divorce hearing. Both spouses are typically required to attend.  If the parties hire an attorney and sign affidavits to the divorce, they are not required to attend court. 

Another pro of a no-fault divorce is that in some fault states, a party can successfully argue against a divorce though they need to convince the Judge that they are not at fault.  There are several grounds a party can use, and each requires a large amount of witnesses and evidence, but some divorces have been denied. 

What are the cons?  A no-fault jurisdiction makes it very easy for parties to divorce.  This could be seen as encouraging parties to divorce instead of following a timeline or stating a reason.  Said time lines and reasons force parties to face their marriage and what has happened in it.  This could result in parties attempting counseling or giving their marriage another try. 

Further, if a party has committed bad acts, such as abandoning their spouse or committing marital misconduct usually in the form of adultery, then the Court can take that into account when entering its Order. Marital misconduct can be taken into account in child custody, child support, property distribution and the length of time it takes the parties to become divorced.

Coastal Backpacking in Washington State

The Olympic Coast of Washington is the most primitive natural coastline in the 48 contiguous United States. Part of an ecosystem stretching from Oregon to Alaska, with a rainforest that seldom sees temperatures below freezing in the winter or exceeding 80 degrees in the summer.

This trip, being surrounded by a temperate rain forest with the opportunity for views of wildlife, plants/trees, island sea stacks, and the ocean with it's changing tide pools, provides a unique experience rarely found elsewhere.

Travel is mostly along beaches and rocky shores, except for a few headland trails. The terrain includes sections of sand, cobbles, rocks, logs and forest trails. Navigation is simple, but rising water from the tide can cut you off.

Current tide tables and maps indicating the headland trails are posted at trailheads and coastal ranger stations. Know when tides occur and be aware that winds or off-shore storms can make tides higher than tide tables indicate, making routes impassable even at low tide.

Headland trails, marked by orange and black targets lead over points that can't be rounded from the shoreline. They receive minimal maintenance and are usually steep and muddy. Some headland trails have fixed ropes and sand ladders to aid climbing.

Also, beware of slippery rocks and logs that can be slippery, unstable and can tip or roll. Vibram soles do not give traction on wet or algae-covered rocks, so stay low, take short steps and keep your hands free for balance.

As for this trip, the first section is ~4 miles from Rialto Beach trailhead, along the beach and through Hole in the Wall to just before Cape Johnson, where you'll find Camp 1. From Camp 1 hike North ~4 miles around Cape Johnson (Attempt at low tide only, requires significant boulder hopping) to Cedar Creek and Camp 2. Cedar Creek is an excellent fly-fishing spot and because your are in a national park no licenses are needed.

From Camp 2 hike ~7 miles North past the Norwegian memorial and just before Yellow Banks to Camp 3 (there are numerous campsites inside the edge of the woods).

From Camp 3, continue past Yellow Banks for ~3 miles to Sand Point and Camp 4. This section can be rounded at medium tide through the rock tunnels at the North end of Yellow Banks beach (there are multiple campsites along this beach inside the forest edge).

Form camp 4, continue North to the head of Sand Point beach, where you'll find the marker for the boardwalk to Ozette Ranger Station and home. This last section depending on where you camp on Sand Point beach is ~3 miles long. Because Sand Point receives a lot of day-hikers and is currently restricted from having fires, some people prefer to stay longer at Yellow Banks and just combine the last 2 days hikes for a longer last day hike from Yellow Banks to the Ozette Ranger Station.

This last leg of travel is mostly along a moss covered boardwalk through a jungle like forest with a few bridges to cross streams and benches for rest stops. Navigation is simple, the only clear path is on the boardwalk. The trail receives regular maintenance, but with so much rain (140 to 167 inches annually) the planks can still wear out, so watch out for broken planks and worn sections (bring rain gear).

The proposed schedule above is just a suggestion, based on trip experience and can be altered for weather conditions, tide changes, or individual preferences. There are numerous other campsites along the route or on the beach. Although, be aware of high-tide lines when beach camping or you could wake up in the ocean.
